Self Employment & Budget Management for Artists

With Michelle Allard (HMRC) and Rosie Dewsbury (The Art House)

When: Thursday 7 June, 11am–3pm

Where: The Art House

Cost: Members £5 / Non-Members £7 / Organisations £15

Being a self employed artist gives you greater freedom to choose work; allows you to work for many different people; can lead to a better work-life balance; and means significant tax savings.

So, what are the steps to becoming self employed? Once you are self employed, how do you manage your finances as a business?

These questions will be answered during the morning session with Michelle Allard of HMRC. You will leave with an understanding of:

  • How to register your business;
  • What National Insurance Contributions you need to make;
  • What records you need to keep, until when;
  • What Business Expenses are allowable and unallowable;
  • Tax allowances that you are entitled to;
  • Key dates for self assessment.

Rosie Dewsbury, Business Manager (The Art House) will then lead a workshop on how to build and manage a project budget. You will leave equipped to deliver against the budgeting requirements of funding applications and activity reports - including Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts funding scheme.

One to One Creative and Business Assistance
Free to Art House members.

1 to 1 advice sessions can be carried out face-to-face or over the phone. These sessions aim to provide you with the intensive support you need, relating to a particular area of your business or practice. Pecha Kucha Nights

Cost: £3

The "Merrie City" of the Middle Ages, Wakefield is home to the Rhubarb Triangle, medieval mystery plays and its own sweet currency - the Yorkshire Penny (or Pontefract Cakes). It has witnessed the growth and decline of major wool, textile and coal industries. It has also been birthplace to many a talent. From the art of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Turner Prize winner Martin Creed; to the words of writers George Gissing and David Story; and the batting skills of Geoffrey Boycott!

At Pecha Kucha* Night Wakefield, we're bringing together the many disciplines of the cultural and creative industries. Whether artist or architect, actor or poet, graphic designer or writer, dancer or sports person, all or none of these. The events are about the known and unknown talent of Wakefield district and beyond bringing entertainment, education and inspiration.

In July, we're jumping on the band wagon and asking presenters to respond to the theme of the Olympics. Presenters can take as broad and controversial a view on this theme as they wish.

*Pecha Kucha follows a 20x20 format. Each presenter has 20 images, each showing for 20 seconds making for a presentation of approximately 6 1/2 minutes. Contact Elinor if you're interested in presenting or just want to know more about the event. Elinor
