Writing about your work 2010
Thursday 27 May 10 am to 4.30 pm
Many accomplished artists find writing about their work at least as difficult as producing the work itself. Writing about one's art is intensely personal, but at the same time faces public scrutiny and the need to 'sell' to a wide range of audiences.
There's seldom time or space to give writing about your work the attention it needs.
This face-to-face workshop provided just that. Instead of just hearing someone talk about writing, participants actually put into practice nuts-and-bolts writing strategies, so that by the end of the day participants had a short piece of polished writing about their own work - and the tools to adapt it for use in a range of contexts.
Participants received no-pressure coaching from an experienced tutor taking them step by step through the writing process. Participants worked in pairs and in small groups to review and re-draft, with a supportive 'audience' which was essential to creating clear and accessible text.
The aim of the day was to produce a generic 'Artist's Statement' from scratch. Participants also looked briefly at other forms of specialised writing, such as website copy, the CV and application to exhibition/commission-for all of which the statement can form a base.
