"It was great to test my practice on an audience beyond the North West area."
(Carol Hanson, Site Specific Installation Artist, March 2014)
Since 2011, The Art House has been bringing new creative life to empty offices, shops and other unused commercial buildings. We have taken on vacant spaces across Wakefield giving artists the chance to experiment, respond to a site and reach new audiences. These spaces are used in a variety of ways: some are available as studios, others are used as residency and project space.
The scheme aims to:
— encourage the regeneration of unused commercial spaces through cultural and creative activity
— support the production of new work in response to particular physical and/or social contexts
— support new artwork that engages with audiences outside traditional gallery and cultural settings
— encourage audiences to engage with locations that might otherwise be unused and to view them afresh
— reach audiences that might not otherwise enter a cultural venue
Recent projects have included a residency in a city centre shop by Kate Genever and Steve Pool of Poly-Technic, during which time they made a series of video works for their Poly Vision YouTube Channel, and a temporary Art Club, running a range of workshops and events, from life drawing to poetry readings, set up by artists’ Collective, Corner 165.
Spaces currently available for studio use:
Central Wakefield - A variety of low cost units are available in Customs House, The Spring Wakefield. Spaces available are on the first floor. Lift access, toilets and kitchen facilties included. No on sight parking, however street parking is available nearby.
