An Introduction to Bookbinding

28.03.2015 to 28.03.2015

10am - 4pm
£60 including materials

Tutor: Katrina Cowling

This workshop is an introduction into the world of book-binding. Learn the ancient techniques of Coptic-binding and try your hand at the delicate Japanese Stab-stitch. Make 'accordion' books and accessories such as belly-bands and pocket covers using recycled and scrap papers and specialist materials and tools.

Perfect for handmade gifts as well as for more practical uses such as pamphlets, mini-zines, sketchbooks, notebooks, journals and photo-albums.

On completion of the workshop participants will leave with their own hand bound books, a worksheet detailing everything learnt on the course and the skills to make their own books at home using minimal equipment.

With the advent of kindles and digitised media, books are becoming less and less an integral part of our lives. They can however, be beautiful objects and gifts, to look after, to treasure and to pass down.

Katrina Cowling is a Fine Art graduate from Falmouth University. Although her practice mainly consists of large-scale sculptural installation, her long-standing interest in and curiosity for artist’s books compelled her to learn certain techniques for herself and eventually to share those techniques with others.
