Course Description

Blind embossing (raised) and debossing (indented) uses no ink and is used to highlight a specific area/space/surface producing a clean and distinctive subtle image on paper. You will produce a unique collection of well-defined permanent relief patterns using natural materials, man-made objects and laser cutter cut-outs ‘printed’ onto damp or dry paper leaving delicate and detailed imprints. You will discover how to soak and use a range of papers, you will learn how to use our laser cutter facility to create a variety of shapes or letters and you will use our large etching press to produce your ‘prints’.

Who is the course for?

Suitable for complete beginners or those who wish to learn a new creative technique. This course is for anyone interested in making a mark in a unique and intriguing way.

Do I need to bring anything?

If you have previous prints you would like to emboss/deboss you are welcome to bring them along. If you would like to bring in a range of organic items i.e. rice, wool, leaves etc., man- made items i.e. rubber bands, lace, ribbon, strings etc. please bring them too. All tools and materials are provided, along with a set of technical notes.

Your Tutor

Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, embossing, debossing, analogue/slow photography, memories, ephemera and graphic narrative to create books and images. Joanna is currently studying for a MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of different groups of people including children and adults. Workshop and course bookings may be cancelled up to 10 working days before the scheduled start date. Our commercial workshops support the work we do as a charity, and because materials and equipment are ordered in advance, we regret that refunds cannot be offered less than ten working days before the workshop date. In the event that The Art House needs to cancel a workshop, your ticket will be refunded in full. Bookings cannot be transferred between courses however bookings can be transferred to another person in the event that you are unable to attend on the day.
