ASCENDING Jaimini Patel

30.07.2014 to 27.08.2014

Jaimini Patel will create a new site-responsive work for the Chantry Chapel crypt in Wakefield.

"I was immediately drawn to this unique space within this unique building.  Narrow, winding, medieval steps deposit you into a dark cavity of crumbling sandstone.  Three slender windows pointing towards the Calder River illuminate the space.  The crypt retains the character of the original 14th century chapel with its hand chiselled walls that mimic the surface of the water outside.  The urgency of the river and the busy surrounding streets are forgotten once inside.  I was struck by the intensity of the contrasts the senses encounter and how few people would have had this experience.  I wanted to respond to this location within the river by creating an installation that would heighten the quality of light, air and stillness."

Exhibition Opening Times:
30 July - ArtWalk, 5pm - 9pm
31 July - I August (times tbc: volunteer dependent)
